Japan: Hokuseido Press / Japan Travel Bureau, . Hardcover. Small 8vo. Textured beige paper over boards with paper labels. xv, 330pp. Floral endpapers. Very good. Top of paper spine label a bit chipped, else tight and quite nice. Item #48756
Handsome second edition of this travelogue first published pre-World War Two (1935). Laid in is a delightful menu from the Fuji View Hotel at Lake Kawaguchi, 5½" X 7½", bearing printed date of 9 March 1947. Crudely printed dinner menu, entirely in English, of very Western fare. At lower right is a hasty and crude watercolor in brown of a three-piece band, at lower left color watercolor images of what appears to be a man dancing with a woman in brightly-colored floor-length dress (geisha?) as a seated couple watch from a table. Very good. Some edgewear. Also present is a brief note in ink to this book's owner, a Father Lambert, from "The Missionaries of Our Lady Of Mercy" and dated from Tokyo on 6 April 1947, 4" X 3", thanking him "for all you do for us, and many prayers ascend for you and yours and for all your Intentions." Uncommon and a fascinating example of the immediate post-war attempt to recapture tourism dollars and reconstruct the shattered Japanese economy.
