Paris: Le Charivari, 7 December 1839. Lithograph. 4to (8 1/8" X 11 1/8"). Very good. Faint age toning only. Tipped to backing board and cream paper matte, old but nice and faintly age toned. Item #48449
This is the December 7, 1839 lithograph (trimmed) of Plate 15 in this illustrated newspaper's "Emotions Parisiennes" (Emotions of Paris) series -- a bold, clean impression. A flustered elderly gentleman at left, hat pulled down over his eyes, addresses a waiter clutching a serving tray in a restaurant. Partial title cited above continues: "que voulez-vous que je fasse de ca; j'anne mieux une marmte: donnez-moi une marmite!" An attractive copy, with news text and advertisements on verso.. "Le Charivari" (literally, "Hullabaloo") was a satirical newspaper that began in 1832 and continued until 1935, publishing reviews as well as political cartoons and caricatures such as Daumier's.
