Now, Hear This!

New York: W.W. Norton & Company, [1965]. Hardcover. Introduction by Herman Wouk. 8vo. Quarter grey cloth with blue lettering and blue paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. 254pp. Near fine/very good. Jacket mildly edgeworn, with several archivally-closed (on verso) edge tears. Item #48211

Handsome, tight first edition of this humorous WW2 novel about Boatswain's Mate First Class Fatso Gioninni aboard the aircraft carrier "Okinawa" by this U.S. Navy rear admiral (1901-77) whose distinguished World War Two career included taking on U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic, in which he famously captured the German submarine U-505 on June 4, 1944; postwar he transitioned into writing nautical fiction and nonfiction. This sharp copy has been inscribed and signed by him large and bold in blue ink on front flyleaf: "Chicago / Feb 4, 65 / To: Harry / with best regards and / good wishes / Dan, / D.V. Gallery." A superb copy, rarely found signed.
