First edition, second state, with no "Sustainers' Edition" label on front pastedown. Tight and nice, with catchy front board image of Chicago meat-packing factories belching smoke -- and this copy with choice autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a near fine Typed Note Signed from Sinclair, 1p, 7½" X 5", Pasadena, CA, 29 September 1939. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). On imprinted letterhead, Sinclair tells this admirer "I... appreciate your remembering my birthday, and I thank you for your kind wishes." Signed boldly in ink. THE novel that changed The Windy City's meat-packing industry, exposing its horrific working conditions, even more horrific sanitary conditions and mankind's astonishing inhumanity to fellow man and beast alike.
