Signed FDC, 6½" X 3½, cancelled in Washington, DC on 29 July 1998 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Fine. Single "Breast Cancer" stamp at upper right, with special cancellation that depicts a microscope and states "Breast Cancer Research." At extreme lower left is typed "SHIRLEY TEMPLE BLACK -- ACTRESS/DIPLOMAT," and above this she boldly inscribes and signs in blue ballpoint "To P. Johnston / From / Shirley Temple Black." In 1972 Temple was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy, writing about it in a magazine article and focusing attention on this hush-hush topic and increasing awareness. Accompanied by a fine 10" X 8" black and white glossy still scene from the 1949 drama "The Story of Seabiscuit," a closeup of a smiling 21-year-old alongside co-star Lon McCallister. Small portion of original FDC transmittal envelope also present.
