Excellent trio of this enormous pioneering historical novel first published in 1933. This triple decker features colophon at rear noting limitation to 1500 numbered copies (this #1056) signed by Wilson in his usual green ink -- and better yet this copy bears an author letter tipped facing title page of the first volume -- a unique frontispiece. TNS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Talbot County, MD, 16 December 1938. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. Original folds. On his imprinted letterhead, writing shortly after release of this LEC edition, Allen thanks this admirer for "a pleasant birthday greeting and this is to say I appreciated it very much." Boldly signed in black ink. Publisher's 4pp leaflet ("The Artist's Note Upon the Lithographs") and smaller notice announcing availability of suite of 50 signed proofs laid in. NEWMAN 94.
