Attractive copy of this lovely edition designed by Carl Purington Rollins, with rear colophon noting a smaller than usual limitation of 100 numbered copies (this #377) instead of their usual 1500, each boldly signed in full in brown ink by Curry. This copy bears a fine Typed Note Signed from introducer Van Doren to, appropriately, a soldier: Tipped to inner flyleaf, heavy stock 5" X 3" buff postal card, New York, NY, n.y. [postal cancellation 18 October 1942]. Near fine. Addressed to Private Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), who saw wartime service in the South Pacific and later became a respected Civil War and Lincoln scholar. Van Doren thanks this regular correspondent for birthday greetings, adding: "Though it has cost me a day of acute nostalgia for the Islands, which I think of always with intense affection." Boldly signed. Laid in is the publisher's 5½" X 8½" announcement for this title and also the 4pp "Monthly Letter." NEWMAN 155.
