Pristine, tight first edition of this breathtaking volume in the "Masters of American Design" series, a homage to the most influential type designer ever (1865-1947) -- and a contributor's copy. Handsomely inscribed and signed by the author in black fineline on half-title page: "Now I see why Goudy / loved Scripps -- / DJR Bruckner / 8/2/92" -- "Scripps" refers to Goudy's Scripps College Old Style typeface that he designed in 1941 and, although not named, Bruckner inscribed this for artist and type designer Judith Sutcliffe (1942-2021), who is noted on the dust jacket's rear flap for providing "Yearly figures set in Goudy Newstyle, a Goudy face translated digitally" for the jacket's back panel. Bruckner (1933-2013) was a well-known "New York Times" book and theater critic.
