The wife of pro wrestler Roy McClarity (1918-98) was nicknamed "The Wrestling Housewife" and appeared in hundreds of matches in the 1950s and '60s, often paired with Rose Roman. Item #47245
Highly unusual matte-finish IPS, heavy stock 16" X 20", Chicago, IL, 7 November 1959. Near fine. Handsome oversize print created by a hardcore wrestling admirer, though it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Full-length pose showing a seated, smiling Strimple in one-piece swimsuit wearing a "Wrestling's Mrs. America" sash. At lower right, she boldly inscribes and signs in blue ballpoint "To Donald M. Burnell / 'A Winner Never Quits / And A quitter never / wins.' / Best of Luck / Always / Shirley Strimple / Girl Wrestler / Marigold / Chicago, Ill. / Nov. 7, 1959." Most unusual item the "Golden Age of Wrestling" and quite likely one of a kind in this large format.
