Chicago. Maurine WATKINS.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1927. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Beige and green striped paper over boards with paper front board label and green cloth tape spine. ix 111pp. Good plus. Though internally tight and near fine, the boards are quite edgeworn and rubbed, though still sound, and the green cloth tape spine is modern. Item #47093

Tight, fairly attractive first edition of this first volume in editor George Jean Nathan's "The Theatre of Today" series. Watkins (1896-1969) was a playwright and screenwriter and this by far her best known work, turned into a 1927 film, a 1942 Ginger Rogers film remake, a 1975 musical and finally a 2002 film. This copy bears two choice autograph additions: Tipped to front flyleaf are two fine, matching, heavy stock 5" X 3" cards boldly signed by two of the 2002 film version stars: At top is Richard Gere (who plays "Billy Flynn"), who signs in black ballpoint and dates it 29 December 1979 at upper right, and below him is Chita Rivera (who played lead Velma Kelly in the 1975 Broadway play and in the film plays prostiutute "Nicky"), who signs in orange fineline and dates it 20 September 1969 at upper right. Original Gere and Rivera transmittal envelopes laid in. A uniquely unusual copy of this scarce title.
