Chicago: Dr. J.R. Mabee, 1929. Paperback. 24mo. Stiff tan pictorial wrappers. 56pp. Inside wrapper advertisements. Very good. Text block moderately age toned, per usual. Item #47084
A tight and nice example of this surprisingly scarce street guide, which is really just an excuse for multi-page advertisements from this "Doctor For Men," a syphilis specialist who also discusses other STDs such as "Hard Chancre," "Chancroid," "Bubo," "Balinitis" and of course gonorrhea. Two pages near the close feature the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox schedules for "Abroad" and "At Home" and another two pages tout Dr. Mabee in German and in Polish. The effect of the Great Depression was certainly being felt, for near the booklet's close a large headline reads "All Fees Reduced" and explains, "While going through the present commercial depression, I find a great many unemployed working men whose incomes have been greatly reduced or who have no income whatsoever.... " Rear cover features calendar for the year 1932, thus dating this printing. A fascinating piece and quite uncommon.
