Frank Leahy and the Fighting Irish: The Story of Notre Dame Football.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, [1944]. Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth with tan lettering. vii, 250pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Light binding wear (mainly to spine head/tail), else tight and internally near fine. Item #47075

Attractive first edition. Not only is the front flyleaf boldly signed (with "Sincerely") in black ink by Ward (1896-1955), noted sports writer and "Chicago Tribune" sports editor, but this unique copy has been extra-illustrated with the addition of bold signatures on matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards of eight Notre Dame football players of the mid-1940s. In order: Front flyleaf, below Ward's signature, bears ANGELO BERTELLI (1921-99, College Football Hall of Famer and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who went on to play pro football -- his full-page portrait faces page 180), who signs in black ballpoint, adds "Notre Dame" beneath and dates it 21 January 1989 at upper right; and beneath him PATRICK J. FILLEY (1923-2000, who played guard and went on to coach), who signs hugely in blue ballpoint and dates it 28 July 1988 at upper right. Front flyleaf verso bears JOHNNY LUJACK (born 1925, College Football Hall of Famer and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who played for Chicago Bears), who signs in black ballpoint and dates it 12 January 1973 at upper right; and beneath him JIM MELLO (1920-2006, who played fullback/linebacker and went on to brief pro career), who signs in blue ballpoint and dates it 14 April 1983 at upper right. Half-title page bears CREIGHTON E. MILLER (1922-2002, College Football Hall of Famer who played halfback and went on to coach -- his-full-page portrait faces page 181), who signs in blue ballpoint and dates it 29 November 1978 at upper right; and beneath him MILT PIEPUL (1918-94, who played fullback and went on to brief pro career and coaching), who signs in black ballpoint and dates it 8 May 1984 at upper right. Half-title page verso bears LOU RYMKUS (1919-98, who played tackle and went on to pro and noted coaching career), who signs in black fineline and dates it 28 July 1988 at upper right; and beneath him JACK ZILLY (1921-2009, who played defensive end and went on to pro career). All eight original transmittal envelopes laid in. Quite an exceptional and unusual copy.
