Chicago: Breeder's Gazette Print, 1914. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Quarter brown calf with gilt spine lettering and green cloth. 1087pp. Frontispiece, numerous illustrations. Very good. Very faintest of mild edgewear only -- overall tight, bright, lovely. Item #46592

Handsome first edition of this scarce breed chronicle -- and not the green cloth with pictorial label usually seen, but a deluxe quarter leather edition. This was the personal copy of Alfred N. Abbott (1862-1929), noted Illinois farmer, cattle and hog rancher, state legislator, president of the Illinois State Farmers' Institute and Deputy Commissioner of the Illinois Commission to the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition; and then of his son, Louis A. Abbott (1891-1982). It seems that original owner Alfred passed it down to his son, who signs an inner flyleaf, adding "'Christmas' / 1922." Tipped to the front pastedown is an extraordinary addition: "Constitution and By-Laws of the Illinois State Hereford Breeders' Association," a 24mo 8-page pamphlet with stiff grey pictorial wrappers. Near fine. Front wrapper notes "Organized April 10, 1917" and first text page lists the first slate of officers of this just-formed association, headed by no less than "A.N. Abbott" as president; he pencils "Abbott" beneath his printed name. Laid in is the perfect bookmark: A preprinted 9-cent postal card written to Louis Abbott by his niece and dated 1 September 1974 sending thanks "for your nice hospitality" and chatting about a recent visit. Sanders (1860-1948) founded and edited the influential livestock journal "The Breeder's Gazette" and authored a number of important cattle books and the popular "At the Sign of the Stock Yard Inn" (1915). This quarter calf edition is quite scarce and this sharp copy, owned by the first president of the Illinois State Hereford Breeders' Association (with his copy of their first constitution) and his Hereford rancher son, is quite special. RAMPAGING HERD 2001.
