Group of political buttons with Typed Note Signed.

Group of political buttons with Typed Note Signed.

The son-in-law of inventor George M. Pullman was a Republican politician who served as Illinois representative (1906-11), governor (1917-21) and 1920 presidential candidate. Item #46520

Group of four political buttons, chronologically as follows: 1) "Lowden / For Governor," a 7/8" diameter pinback button with portrait within white circle against blue background with white lettering; inset paper backing on verso notes "Geraghty Mfg. Co. of Chicago, likely 1916. Near fine. 2) "Lowden / For President," a 1" diameter pinback button with portrait within black circle against white background with black lettering; inset paper backing on verso notes "Bastian Bros. Co." of Rochester, NY, undated but 1920. Near fine. Not the common right-facing three-quarter portrait within grey circle, but the seldom-seen left-facing variant. 3) "We Can / Win With / Lowden," a 7/8" diameter pinback button in red, white and blue with elephant graphic; printing on verso notes "Greenback Co. of Chicago, undated but 1920. Very good. Several miniscule scuffs, else bright and nice. 4) "Lowden" cufflink, ½" diameter, white lettering against blue background. No manufacturer's mark; undated but likely 1920. Very good. Several tiny edge chips, else nice. Very uncommon. This attractive quartette is accompanied by a TNS, 1p (lettersheet), 5 3/4" X 8", Oregon, IL, 5 April 1924. Addressed to George P. Hambrecht (1871-1943, noted education official, Lincoln scholar and founder of the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin). Near fine. Cordial brief note in which the presidential hopeful notes, "It gives me pleasure to enclose you herewith a copy of the address to which you refer and to which I have signed my name," signed large and bold. The address is not present, but chances are this Lincoln collector requested a copy of some speech given by the former governor at a February 2nd Lincoln birthday event -- an event at which no self-respecting politician with higher political aspirations would fail to "test the waters" for a second potential presidential run, which in the end he declined, helping clear the path for Calvin Coolidge.
