First edition, entirely in French, of this scarce study of gnostic mysticism, revised and published in English as "The Tree of Gnosis" in 1992. Although not signed by Couliano, this special copy was one of his personal copies and bears the ownership of a University of Chicago staffer who acquired it when Regenstein Library was bequeathed his library and sold off those which duplicated titles already in their collection. Ioan Petru Couliano (or Culiano; 1950-91) was a controversial Romanian philosopher, essayist and historian of ideas, religion and culture; in May 21, 1991, he was murdered -- some say assassinated -- in a bathroom at the University of Chicago's Divinity School, likely because he proved a vocal critic of Romania's Communist post-Revolution regime in interviews and articles. Great, unusual copy.
