Sherman: A Memorial in Art, Oratory, and Literature by the Society of the Army of the Tennessee....

Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1904. Hardcover. Small 4to. Green cloth with gilt lettering and front board pictorial giltstamping. 410pp. Captioned tissue-guarded frontispiece, numerous illustrations, maps, captioned tissue-guarded full-page engravings. Very good. Mild edgewear and touch of foxing to preliminary leaves, but overall tight and internally quite nice. Item #46218

Attractive first edition, with front board giltstamping of equestrian Sherman statue bold and bright. Speakers include President Theodore Roosevelt, Daniel Sickles and several other generals, etc. This copy extra-illustrated with two choice Civil War-era additions: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a very good printed "General Orders, No. 68," 1p, 5" X 7¼", Washington, DC, 22 February 1864. Very good. Faint age toning and typical 3-punch holes at left margin, not affecting text. This printed memorandum, which would have been distributed to companty clerks throughout the Union Army, contains "Public Resolution -- No. 12," a "Joint Resolution tendering the thanks of Congress to Major General W.T. Sherman... for their gallant and arduous services in marching to the relief of the Army of the Cumberland, and for their gallantry and heroism in the battle of Chattanooga...." Signed in type at the close of E.D. Townsend, Assistant Adjutant General. Facing this is the other extra-illustration, a near fine heavy stock 7" X 10½" (same trim size as text block) steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Sherman in uniform based on Matthew Brady's well-known 1865 portrait of a stern Sherman with right hand tucked inside greatcoat -- likely a book illustration of the period from an unidfentified volume. A nice if routine copy of this volume and with two choice period additions.
