Attractive first edition of this massive, exceptionally well-illustrated trio produced under the directorship of its famed second leader, intrepid one-armed explorer/geologist John Wesley Powell (1834-1902). Part I covers "Report of the Director," Part II "Geology" and Part III "Irrigation." Among the many progress reports in various scientific endeavors are significant scientific reports in Volumes II and II. Volume II includes Israel Cook Russell's "Second Expedition to Mount St. Elias," Nathaniel Southgate Shaler's "The Geological History of Harbors," Bailey Willis's "The Mechanics of Appalachian Structure," Henry Gannett's "The Average Elevation of the United States," T. Nelson Dale's "The Rensselaer Grit Plateau in New York" and Samuel Hubbard Scudder's "The American Tertiary Aphidae." Volume III includes F.H. Newell's "Water Supply for Irrigation," Herbert M. Wilson's "American Irrigation Engineering" and Engineering Results of Irrigation Survey," and A.H. Thompson's Report Upon the Construction of Topographic Maps and the Selection and Survey of Reservoir Sites in the Hydrographic Basin of the Arkansas River, Colorado" and "Report Upon the Location and Survey of Reservoir Sites During the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 1892." All 5 pocket maps and present and in sharp condition. Discreet ex-library, the only markings being a faint number at each spine base, small blind-embossed name on each title page and small elegant bookplate of one of Illinois' oldest public libraries on each front pastedown noting the pair were given by long-time Illinois congressman Robert R. Hitt (1834-1906). Superb set of this outstandingly, lavishly illustrated report.
