An attractive early printing of this popular, oft-reprinted 1848 text featuring outstanding planetary plates. Ormsby M. "Old Stars" Mitchel (1810-62) -- misspelled "Mitchell" on book's title page -- was an academic and astronomer but is usually remembered as the Union general of "Great Locomotive Chase" fame in the Civil War. Nice copy of a scarce title.
