The Palio and the Contrade: Historical Evolution.

Siena: Monte dei Paschi, 1958. Hardcover. 4to. Cream paper over boards with gilt lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 372pp. Color tipped-in frontispiece, numerous illustrations (some tipped in), color plates. Very good/good plus. Jacket quite edgeworn (mainly along top), with several edge chips; front inner hinge a tad delicate, but expertly, discreetly and archivally strengthened, thus tight; preliminary leaves lightly foxed, as is top 2" of binding. Item #45374

A tight, nice first edition of this hefty history of the "Palio di Siena," a famed horse race that has taken place twice yearly (2 July and 16 August) since medieval times in this central Italian city. Half-title page bears an enormous inked presentation inscription in Italian (signer unknown) to Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), two-term Illinois governor and twice presidential candidate, at that time U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., dated 2 July 1961. Ambassador Stevenson presumably visited Siena, likely on U.N. business, and was present at one of the 1961 races.
