Young Lonigan: A Boyhood in Chicago Streets.

New York: The Vanguard Press, 1932. Hardcover. Introduction by Frederic M. Thrasher. 8vo. Brown woven cloth with pale orange paper labels. xii, 308pp. Near fine. Item #44946

Lacks dust jacket, else a superbly tight and bright first edition of the first novel by the famed Farrell -- first volume in the "Studs Lonigan" trilogy. This handsome copy bears a fine autograph addition, for tipped facing the title page is a 9½" X 4¼" pictorial envelope for New York's "Hotel Chelsea" addressed in blue ballpoint to a Philip Allen Friedman of Brooklyn; above the hotel graphic at upper left Farrell signs boldly in full. Undated, but postally cancelled in New York on 30 April 1953. Very good. Longer than book's trim size, this left quarter of envelope folded under. Front pastedown bears handsome custom bookplate of noted 20th century fiction collector Harry C. Kelly, noted for his Steinbeck and other collections.

Price: $195.00
