The Portable F. Scott Fitzgerald. F. Scott FITZGERALD.

The Portable F. Scott Fitzgerald.

New York: The Viking Press, 1945. Hardcover. Selected by Dorothy Parker. Introduction by John O'Hara. 16mo. Light brown cloth with blue lettering. xix, 835pp. Very good. Minor and mild binding edgewear, else tight and internally fine. Item #44686

Wonderfully tight and nice first edition of the 14th volume in the noted "Viking Portable" series, begun in 1943. This copy bears inked ownership signature on front flyleaf of "Stevenson" -- Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), that is, Illinois governor and two-time presidential candidate. This Fitzgerald compilation came out when he had been deceased only a few years, and was pivotal in reviving his dormant reputation, which scholar Matthew J. Bruccoli and a few others turned into a juggernaut in the 1950s and '60s. Surprisingly scarce.
