Item #44188 The Closed Garden. Julian GREEN.

The Closed Garden.

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, [1929]. Hardcover. Translation from French by Henry Longan Stuart. Introduction by Andre Maurois. Small 8vo. Pale green cloth with dark green lettering, pictorial dust jacket. ix, 398p, (7pp). Decorative endpapers. Near fine/very good. Minor jacket edgewear; ownership signature on half-title page. Item #44188

Quite handsome reprint edition of this early novel by the prolific American-French writer and novelist (1900-98), though G & D appears only at base of spine and base of jacket spine, with the original publisher only (Harper & Brothers) noted on title page. A volume in this reprint house's "Novels of Distinction" series" -- interestingly, a colorful printed foldout leaflet advertising this series is laid in. Delightful jacket front panel art (not used in the true first edition jacket) shows a young woman swooning in a garden, captioned "The story of a young French girl, who in the loneliness and isolation of her 'closed garden' conceives an irrational and unrequited love." A superb copy.
