Publisher W. Clark Kenyon provides the introduction to this facsimile reprint of The Neale Publishing Company's 1911 first edition, which Frank Byrne critiques as "The rewritten version of an earlier account; much mellowed toward captors" -- this "earlier account" being his 1868 "What I Saw in Dixie; or, Sixteen Months in Rebel Prisons," which Byrne describes as "A reworked Diary of 1863-1865 confinements at Libby, Macon, Charleston, and Columbia; bitterly anti-Confederate." Byers was a sergeant with the 5th Iowa and its last survivor. NEVINS I, 187.
