St. Louis: Imperial Publishing Co., . Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth rebind with gilt spine lettering. 592pp. Frontispiece, numerous full-page illustrations. Very good. Text block moderately age toned as usual, and largely free of the tiny edge chips to which this delicate, low-grade paper is prone; inoffensive stain to power page corners. Item #43209
Unusually clean, tight and nice copy of this enormously enlarged edition of Custer's 1874 "My Life on the Plains," first issued in this posthumous form with a modified title in 1883 and published under this and other St. Louis imprints (Excelsior Publishing Co., Royal Publishing Co.) in 1891. Typically verbose 19th century subtitle (take a deep breath) reads: "By a Corps of Competent Authors and Artists, Being a Complete History of Indian Life, Warfare and Adventure in America, Making Specially Prominent the Late Indian War, with Full Descriptions of The Messiah Craze, Ghost Dance, Life of Sitting Bull, the Whole Forms an Authentic and Complete History of the Savage Races in America -- Their Illustrious Leaders, Their Beliefs, Manners and Customs, Comprising Terrible Battles, Wonderful Escapes, Thrilling Tales of Heroism, Daring Exploits, Wonderful Fortitude, etc., etc." HOWES C 981 note.
