A Brief Description of New York, Formerly Called New Netherlands with the Places Thereunto Adjoining. Likewise a Brief Relation of the Customs of the Indians There.

New York: William Gowans, 1845. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering. 57pp, 16pp ads. Very good. Modern rebind is fine, while text block is lightly age toned only. Item #43191

The 1670 true first edition of this constituted the first publication in English on New York, while the edition offered here is the first title in the "Bibliotheca Americana" series published by this noted New York antiquarian bookseller (1803-70) -- "A New Edition with an Introduction and Copious Historical Notes by Gabriel Furman." This copy is tight and fairly bright. Of great interest are the small, lightly pencilled margin notes on quite a few pages and the eight pages with extensive pencil notes on the large bottom margin -- fascinating as their nature (correcting the most minor of typographical errors, for instance, or the insertion of detailed learned notes and modifications) often suggest they were made by someone connected with the book. Perhaps Furman or Gowans thinking of a future edition? Scarce, in any case, and an exceptionally attractive copy. HOWES 259 note.
