Item #42758 The Blue Book of the Furniture Trade: Twenty-Fourth Edition. July 1, 1885. M. D. TALCOTT.

The Blue Book of the Furniture Trade: Twenty-Fourth Edition. July 1, 1885.

Chicago: National Furniture Association, 1885. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue blind-embossed cloth with gilt lettering. 447pp, (12pp). Very good. Mild edgewear. Item #42758

A tight, attractive copy of the 24th edition of this thorough state-by-state directory of all those involved in the furniture business throughout the U.S., closing with a small section on Canada -- an exceptional wealth of dense data for the historical researcher. Neatly tipped to the front pastedown is a printed "Key to Reference Book and Correction Sheet," tipped to the front flyleaf is a printed letter describing this edition and tipped to the rear pastedown is a printed "Law and Circulation Department of the National Furniture Association" circular. Rear flyleaf bears interesting ink ownership inscription: "Mrs Eva Best / Detroit Free PRess Household / Dayton Ohio, / July 17 -- 1890." Eva Best (born 1851) was a Chicago-born poet, short story writer and popular dramatist who in 1882 became editor of the household department of Detroit's major newspaper. Odd that such a specialized reference work would find its way into her library, though perhaps her newspaper position put her in a position to make consumer recommendations. Nice and unusual copy of a scarce title.
