Mr. Lincoln's Navy.

New York: Longmans, Green and Company, 1957. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. xiii, 328pp. Illustrations, maps. Very good. Mild edgewear, with spine faintly sunned and faint discoloration to upper edge of rear board (only). Item #42444

A tight and nice first edition bearing a fine autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is an Autograph Letter Signed from Williams, 1p, 7¼" X 10", Annapolis, MD, 11 March 1959. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Two horizontal light folds. As a long-time officer of the New York Civil War Round Table, Gates was instrumental in getting Williams to address that notable group, and Williams here thanks his friend: "I enjoyed Tuesday evening immensely. You have a fine group of people in your Civil War Round Table, and I was delighted to meet them and enjoy them as an audience..." Boldly penned in blue fountain pen. West (1902-68) was a naval historian and professor of history at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Thomas Wells reviewed this title luke-warmedly as "A brief, generally satisfactory, but pedestrian treatment." NEVINS I, 238.
