This popular American composer of hundreds of songs and dozens of musicals is often remembered for such hits as "Over There," "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag"; he was also a versatile actor, playwright, singer, dancer and producer; in the year of his death he was portrayed by James Cagney in the film "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and later memorialized in the 1968 musical "George M!"
