Tight, handsome first edition of one of the best anthologies of writings about Lincoln by a veritable "Who's Who" of 76 noted Lincoln scholars, each of whose facsimile signature follows their entry. This copy with choice autograph edition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Newman, 1p, 8½" X 11", Chicago, IL, 19 May 1941. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Very good. Original mailing folds. On "Abraham Lincoln Book Shop" letterhead, Newman notes that "My good friend, Dr. Stewart McClelland, of Lincoln Memorial University, has told me about your beautiful 'Amberglow of Abraham Lincoln and Joshua Speed,' written by Arnold Francis Gates. Would you kindly send me a copy...." Boldly signed in black ink. Newman (1912-98) founded Chicago's famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop shortly before this, and Gates twenty years later would be one of the contributors to Newman's "Lincoln for the Ages" anthology.
