Our Diamond Anniversary, 1933-1993: The American Civil War & Lincolniana -- A sampling of rare books, pamphlets and allied material from our shelves.

Chicago: Ralph Geoffrey Newman, Inc., [1993]. Paperback. 4o. Stiff pictorial wrappers. 102pp. Illustrations. Fine. Item #41320

First edition of this last hoorah of the venerable Chicago firm, describing 423 items -- this copy with choice autograph addition: Tipped to inside front wrapper is a Typed Note Signed from Newman, 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Chicago, IL, 2 April 1953. Addressed to Carleton Pyetell. Very good. On "The Civil War Round Table" letterhead, Newman (1911-98) chats about CWRT matters, adding, "We hope that many of the New York CWRT members will be able to take part in the Richmond jaunt this year...." Signed simply "Ralph" in black ink. Begun as The House of Books, an existing firm that Newman bought and took over during the Depression, he changed its name and focus a few years later at the suggestion of Carl Sandburg -- and the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop was born. A useful reference.
