Item #40839 Autograph Note Signed. Harry Allen OVERSTREET.

Autograph Note Signed.

This American writer and lecturer chaired City College of New York's department of philosophy and psychology for many years and published books on those and other topics, most notably the bestseller "The Mature Mind" (1949); since he and poet/psychologist wife Bonaro wrote and lectured often about political issues, communism, academic and civil liberties, the FBI under Hoover considered them subversive and long monitored their activities. Item #40839

ANS, 1p, 7½" X 10½", Chicago, IL, 2 November 1940. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. On letterhead of the "Hotel Eastgate," Overstreet thanks this admirer "warmly for your birthday greetings and good wishes. May I ask you to take my own good wishes in return and apply them... to your forthcoming novel...." Boldly penned in black ink in Overstreet's sloppy script. Uncommon.
