Typed Note Signed / Autograph Manuscript (unsigned).

"Bookman" in every sense of the word: An influential Boston book and typeface designer, historian of the book trade, author of such bookish classics as "In Quest of the Perfect Book: Reminiscences and Reflections of a Bookman" (1926), "The Kingdom of Books" (1927), "The Magic of the Book: More Reminiscences and Adventures of a Bookman" (1930) and "From My Library Walls: A Kaleidoscope of Memories" (1945). Item #40779

TNS, 1p, 5½" X 8", Boston, MA, 1923 March 21. Addressed to Professor Albert Johannsen. Near fine. Faint original folds. "I am very glad to comply... and take pleasure in enclosing a sheet of manuscript taken from 'The Balance,' my latest published volume." Boldly signed in full in black ink. Accompanied by the aforementioned "sheet of manuscript," an unsigned Autograph Manuscript, 1p, 6" X 9½", n.p., n.y. Near fine. Three-punched at left. 24 lines of working draft manuscript boldly penned, complete with a few crossouts and additions in both ink and pencil. This appears as most of pages 215 and 216 in Orcutt's 1922 novel "The Balance: A Novel of Today," published in New York by Frederick A. Stokes Company. Johannsen authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" (University of Oklahoma Press, 1950), the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject, and enjoyed collecting working draft pages from authors. A delightful and unusual pair.
