Item #40060 Reminiscences of the Civil War in the United States. John POTTER.

Reminiscences of the Civil War in the United States.

Oskaloosa, IA: The Globe Presses, 1897. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Pebble-grained blind-ruled black cloth with gilt spine lettering. 196pp. Frontispiece. Very good. Item #40060

Tight, clean, attractive first edition of this slim war memoir by this soldier with the 101st Illinois Volunteers, in later years a pastor with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Iowa. Title continues: "Including Also an Account of a Visit to the Battle Grounds of Tennessee and Georgia in 1895, and a Memorial Sermon, Preached at Montezuma, Iowa, May 26th, 1895." Scarce, especially in this nice condition. James I. Robertson Jr. offers a critique typical of that of many a small-time war participant: "Potter had a penchant for describing in detail small, isolated incidents which he beheld; his memoir as a whole is a disappointment." NEVINS I, 148.
