"Mad Anthony" Wayne's expedition into the Northwest Territory in 1794 included this young weaponeer; Jefferson appointed him Indian Agent at Fort Wayne, from where he reported on the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe; later he served as Indian Agent at Piqua, Ohio, and helped negotiate the Treaty of Sandusky; in later years he held various civic posts in Ohio and founded Kenyon College.
