This powerful Tennessee Democrat was a career politician, serving an impressive 14 terms in Congress (1909-36) and as House Majority Leader from 1933 to 1935 and Speaker of the House from 1935 until his death. Printed Document Signed, 2pp (recto and verso), 8½" X 11", n.p., 1935. Near fine. Item #39620
Single leaf from the "Congressional Record" containing a two-page address by the Congressman titled "The Jews' Contribution to the United States," delivered "Before the Fourteenth Quinquennial Convention of B'nai B'rith, Washington, DC." on 6 May 1935. Across the blank top margin, the representative boldly signs and inscribed in black ink: "Cordially and Sincerely yours, Joseph W. Byrns / Speaker 74th Congress." Most unusual in this form. A wonderful example signed shortly before his death.
