First of this modern edition after the true first edition and first U.S. edition, both in 1926. Odd autograph addition: Noted American sculptor Carl Tolpo (1901-76) was commissioned to create a statue of Illinois senator Everett Dirksen, and on September 16, 1976 this was dedicated on the grounds of the Illinois State Capitol building -- but an inscription on the front pastedown of this book by Tolpo's wife Lily Tolpo (born 1917), also a noted sculptor, records: "Bght in Harlan's Dept Store in Sterling Ill for 5 cents July 27, 1976 on way to Springfield to see the Dirksen statue installed. Lily & Carl Tolpo." The Tolpos underline and margin squiggle several pages in the "Biographical Note." Two months later, and about one week after the formal dedication, Carl Tolpo died. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the English novelist and translator Sydney Schiff (pseudonym Stephen Hudson, 1868-1944), popular novelist of the teens, '20s and '30s -- but is interesting nonetheless.
