Handsome, tight second printing of this hefty and outstandingly illustrated study, with an interesting background: Freeport, Illinois, site of one of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, commissioned a life-size sculpture of the event that was unveiled in 1992. Sculptor Lily Tolpo (1917-2016), wife of the noted sculptor/painter Carl Tolpo (1901-76), was hired by a Freeport City Council committee headed by councilwoman Mickey Martin -- this is the book presented to Tolpo by a grateful Martin. Gift inscription on inner flyleaf reads, in blue ballpoint: "To Lilly, / A dear friend / and a kindred spirit / May this bring you many / hours of enjoyment / Just a small gift from me / for all you did in completing / your wonderful statue of Lincoln / and Douglas in Debate dedicated / in Freeport on the original site / August 27, 1992 / Love / Mickey / Lincoln Douglas Proj Dir / and / Freeport City Council."
