Signed Commemorative Envelope.

This U.S. Navy lieutenant became an ace at the age of 21, downing 6 enemy aircraft in the Asiatic Theatre; near the war's end he was briefly a POW; retired in 1964 as a lieutenant commander. Item #37814

Signed Commemorative envelope, 6½" X 4¼", cancelled at Linton-on-Ouse Bomber Command, U.K., 13 May 1977. Near fine. Left half consists of pictorial color cachet honoring Group Captain Leonard Cheshire, with artwork depicting his airplane over the Linton-on-Ouse base and text at right detailing the commemorative flight on which this envelope was flown. Special circular "40th Anniversary Opening of RAF Linton-on-Ouse Bomber Command." In a blank area at lower right, Moranville signs boldly in black ballpoint, adding "VF-11 Sundowners / 1943-45." Limitation statement on verso notes this is #5 of 11 copies. Accompanied by a printed biographical card about Cheshire and a 4" X 5½" photograph, a modern reprint of a WW2-era portrait of Moranville standing alongside his plane.
