Grasser was a German Luftwaffe fighter ace and Knight's Cross recipient who flew 700 combat missions on the Western and Eastern fronts and North Africa, claiming 103 downed enemy aircraft; Leppa was a fellow Luftwaffe ace, also a Knight's Cross recipient, who flew more than 500 missions and is credited with shooting down 68 enemy aircraft.
