This important federal bureaucratic position was held from 1849 to 1853 by this Connecticut legislator. Closing portion of a Letter Signed, 3 3/4" X 1 3/4", n.p. [Washington, DC], n.y. [ca. 1850]. Near fine. Tipped to slightly larger sheet. Reads in full: "I am very respectfully / Your Obt Servt / C-W. Rockwell / Commissioner of Customs" -- the text secretarial, the signature Rockwell's. An important position in its day, overseeing the U.S. Customs Service, which provided the main source of revenue for the federal government. Item #37180
