Tight, clean, handsome first edition of this volume that "traces the evolution of the creative process in 'building' that first book [Cathedral, 1973] from initial concept to finished drawings." A fine presentation copy, handsomely signed and inscribed by Macaulay large and bold in black fineline opposite the title page: "for Bonnie and Art / Very best Gothic / wishes from a / real fan -- / David Macaulay / 11-7-99." Art Geisert is a noted Midwest children's book etcher and author whose style is very much akin to Macaulay's; some of his books were co-authored by wife Bonnie.
