A tight, pristine first edition of this volume (#59) in editor Samuel Smith's "Twayne's World Leaders Series" -- this copy with a handsome bookplate on the front flyleaf signed in black ballpoint by Downs' widow, Jane B. Downs. A minor ink correction on page 9 appears to be in Robert Downs' hand. Barnard (1811-1900) was a noted Connecticut educational reformer and long time (1855-81) editor of the influential "American Journal of Education."
