Dear Preceptor: The Life and Times of Thomas Wentworth Higginson.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1963. Hardcover. 8vo. Grey cloth with gilt lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. ix, 363pp. Frontispiece, decorative endpapers. Near fine/very good. Jacket slightly edgeworn and a tad rubbed. Item #35452

Tight, handsome first edition of this biography of the military and literary figure (1823-1911). Civil War buffs know him as colonel of the first Union negro army regiment, and in this context Robert W. Johannsen describes this as "An effective study of Higginson's life; the author places strong emphasis on Higginson's friendship with Emily Dickinson." Others know Higginson as writer, abolitionist and mainly the friend and editor of Dickinson. A lovely copy. NEVINS II, 99.
