Signed First Day Cover.

This Czech-born American artist and illustrator supposedly designed the yellow smiley face for a 1951 or '52 UNICEF fundraising campaign called "A Smile for UNICEF," but since the United Nations never copyrighted the image it was picked up in the mid-1960s and has become an icon; as a staff artist for the U.N. Graphic Presentation Unit quite active between 1956 and 1964, he designed a number of U.N. stamps. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled at the United Nations in New York on 1961 February 13 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Near fine. Five Plowitz-designed 8-cent "Cour Internationale de Justice" United Nations stamp at upper right. Attractive printed Artmaster "Honoring the International Court of Justice" cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address present. Near the center, Plowitz signs large and bold in purple ballpoint. Very uncommon. Item #35280
