MORAN, Benjamin (1820-86).

Considered the first American career diplomat, this consular official held positions in the United Kingdom and Portugal; in 1948-49 his diary was published as "The Journal of Benjamin Moran, 1857-65," and chronicles the English reaction to the American Civil War. Bold "Ever truly yours / Benj'n. Moran / Chas. L. Wilson, Esqr." on a 4½" X 1" slip clipped from a letter, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Lightly age toned. Verso, in Moran's hand, reads: "Chester will draw next week. I have the watches. How shall I send them?" Item #35109
