"Nouvelle Edition," entirely in French, of this edition of the French philosopher's influential 1748 "Spirit of the Laws," a treatise on political theory. Remarkably tight and clean and handsome, the text block is astonishingly, marvelously fresh and pristine -- truly fine condition internally. Front flyleaf bears the pencilled ownership signature, dated 1872, of James M. Lynch. Lynch (died 1882) served as chief clerk at the Adjutant General's Office during the Civil War and was appointed quartermaster general in 1865. An all-around beautiful copy custom bound in 1872.
