Lever's Preface to this "New Edition" is dated Trieste 1872, the same year he died in his villa there, thus this undated edition likely dates from shortly thereafter. Lever (1806-72) was an incredibly popular Irish novelist whose popularity rivaled that of Dickens, Thackeray and other giants of his day.
