The parents of Jonas Salk (1914-95, pioneering virologist and medical researcher who created the world's first effective polio vaccine) were Polish-Jewish immigrants, he a designer and manufacturer of women's clothing. Item #31761
Unusual PS, heavy stock 10" X 8", n.p., n.y. [ca. late 1950s]. Near fine. An original "Wide World Photos" news agency photograph (so inkstamped on verso). Superb matte-finish portrait of the proud parents in later years, seated side by side. Each signs boldly in full in black ink beneath their image -- he on his light colored pants (making for excellent contrast), she on a darker skirt (making for average contrast). Most unusual -- probably obtained in the years immediately following the triumphant debut of their son's crowning achievement in 1955, when he was being hailed as a miracle worker and medical pioneer par excellence.
