This Military Intelligence Hall of Fame inductee was an Army general who served throughout the Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection and World War One before being chosen by Pershing to oversee the American Expeditionary Force's intelligence operations -- making him America's first G2; he helped organize the Corps of Intelligence Police, the army's first counterintelligence organization. Large, bold and sloppy "Very cordially yours, / D.E. Nolan. / Maj Gen U.S.A.," 5½" X 2 3/4", Columbus, OH, 1931 June 17. Very good. Name/address of Nolan's command from 1927 to 1931, Headquarters Fifth Corps Area, purple inkstamped at top edge, along with typed date. Autograph material of this military intelligence pioneer is uncommon.
