This career U.S. Army officer was instrumental in establishing the air force as a separate branch of service, transferring into the new U.S. Air Force in 1920; rose through the ranks in aircraft production and instructional capacities to major general, named chief of the Air Corps in 1935; killed when the airplane he was piloting crashed upon landing in Burbank, California. Odd note -- boldly signed in blue fountain pen -- refusing to send his autograph: "I regret very much that I am unable to accommodate you with my autograph. I make it a point to restrict my autograph to friends of long standing...."
